ARTIST STATEMENT
I always loved the Brutalist buildings in Boston, the grayscale, the mass, and the shadows. These same buildings were even better at night. No one there but me. I found comfort in the emptiness and in the knowledge that the forms of said buildings were mine to bask in. I pull a lot of inspiration from the connection I feel to these spaces but also what I discern in the industrial. With that being said, the commodities of construction will always lure me closer.
Rebar
Fire escapes
Fencing
Scaffolding
All vital to a building’s origin and continued survival. A blue-collar playground spread across a cityscape.
My work is an investigation of these concrete blocks. I find peace in the spaces in Boston at night that is filled with life by day, and once the moon waxes they fall a gray. The only sight of life, the overnight workers taking a smoke break. It is the lack of population that makes you feel that much closer, that much more connected, to the stranger waiting for the same bus and the intimacy that builds.
Silence can almost be a beautifully tangible thing in the right space and for me, it is found in the concrete and in the construction zones.
BIO
I declared in metals knowing nothing.
After my first day in class, I was devastated. I was horrible with the saw (the beam that supports the jewelry craft). I left feeling like I had declared in the wrong major.
It was time for me to conclude a vital life takeaway that has gotten me through many rough patches since:
“Nothing worth having comes easy. Success will not fall into my lap.”
Toss that motto in the mix with wanting to make my parents proud for coming to the states and you get one work-addicted girl.
